Nhs school supply sales hit their highest level in nearly six years, with retailers like Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us all reporting record numbers in January.
Sales of school supplies are up more than 3 percent since January, with sales of school uniforms up 5.5 percent.
While the bulk of the gains came from the dollar-store segment, retailers also saw a 3.6 percent jump in the number of school bags sold.
The latest figures show that the number two most-sold category of school supply was the “school supplies for kids,” which includes school bags, backpack bags, and school clothes.
The top-selling category was “school accessories,” which was up 6.7 percent.
The overall category of sales, however, is down 3.4 percent.
The category of items for children is down 7.7 per cent.
The category of products for the elderly was down 6.2 percent, while the category of toys was down 7 percent.
While the overall sales of products were up, the most important factor was the increase in the dollar amount of sales.
The number of dollars sold increased by 10.6 cents to $1.5 trillion.
For the first time since 2014, the dollar value of sales was higher than the annual inflation rate.
The total sales of goods and services for the first quarter were up 3.7 billion dollars, up 5,000 billion dollars from the same quarter last year.
The total number of items sold for children and the elderly is up by 7.6 billion dollars to $2.4 trillion, but that number is down 2.2 billion dollars.
The overall number of sales for goods and service for children, which was down 3 billion dollars last year, was down 2 billion dollars in January 2017.
